Owens meeting with Bengals

Terrell Owens headed to Cincinnati on Tuesday to see if the Bengals are interested in adding him to their stalled-out passing game.

Receiver Chad Ochocinco has been lobbying for the Bengals to sign Owens since the end of last season, when the Bengals’ passing game lacked a deep threat.

The newspaper reported that Owens had dinner with the coaching staff Tuesday night and would visit the Bengals offices on Wednesday.

Owens told WKRC-TV in Cincinnati that he would welcome playing with Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer.

The 36-year-old had tweeted earlier in the day that he was on his way to Cincinnati from Los Angeles.

“En route [at] Natti land!!” Owens tweeted. “i’ll let u guys know how the mtg went! Cn’t go 2 bad considering the pursuit of tht Lombardi shiny thing!!”

Palmer-to-Ochocinco connection helps Bengals clinch North title

The head coach was dry as he ran off the field after clinching a title — no celebratory sideline dousing. Players’ eyes were dry, too — all the tears had been wrung out.

In their finest moment, the Cincinnati Bengals didn’t act like champions. Maybe it was the ugly way they won. Maybe those tearful practices and wrenching eulogies had something to do with it as well.

Either way, they were in the playoffs.

Carson Palmer’s touchdown pass to Chad Ochocinco completed a 98-yard drive in the closing minutes Sunday, sending Cincinnati to a 17-10 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs that clinched the AFC North title five days after the Bengals buried teammate Chris Henry.

They wore the receiver’s No. 15 on their helmets and their hearts.

“I’m not jumping for joy or glee, just thinking about 15 once that clock hits zero,” Ochocinco said. “That was everybody’s mindset, to go out and win this one for him.”

The Bengals (10-5) reached the playoffs for only the second time in the past 19 years after dealing with Henry’s death. His wooden locker stall still has his shoulder pads resting on the top shelf, an assortment of shoes on the bottom rack and his helmet hanging from the side — almost as though he would show up at any moment and suit up.

Chad Ochocinco Wants Bengals To Throw 50 Passes Against Lions

Lots of trouble — or mucho peligro, as Chad Ochocinco might say — could be headed the Lions’ way.

After Cincinnati’s anemic aerial showing Sunday against Cleveland, the Bengals’ top receiver practically threatened a full-scale passing attack against the Lions’ weak secondary.

Ochocinco caught three passes for 38 yards, and Carson Palmer passed for only 110 yards while the Bengals rushed for 210 yards in a 16-7 win over the Browns. Ochocinco, who leads Cincinnati in receiving with 773 yards and five touchdowns, said he wanted a different offensive focus against the Lions on Sunday.

“Now, next week, things are going to have to change,” he told the Cincinnati Enquirer. “The roles need to be reversed. I’m speaking on behalf of myself and the receiving corps. We would like to throw the ball 50 times. I just want to relay that message.”

After Sunday, Cincinnati ranked only 21st in passing offense. But the Lions’ secondary has struggled even against weak passing teams such as Cleveland and has given up big plays consistently.”

WR Henry has season-ending surgery

Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chris Henry will miss the rest of the season after having surgery on his broken left forearm.

Coach Marvin Lewis said Monday that Henry will be placed on injured reserve this week, ending his season.

He broke the forearm on his only catch Sunday during a 17-7 win over Baltimore that kept the Bengals (6-2) in first place in the AFC North.

Henry is in the final year of his contract with the Bengals, who let him go after his fifth arrest following the 2007 season.

Notes: Smith status; Ocho package; Henry profile

Offensive line coach Paul Alexander came off the practice field Thursday choosing not to discuss the status of rookie right tackle Andre Smith but the impact of veteran Scott Kooistra, cut Tuesday to make room for fullback Fui Vakapuna.

“Tough. For seven years he played his guts out,” Alexander said. “You lose versatility. He played four spots (both tackles and guards), he’s very reliable and a hard-try guy.”

Alexander wouldn’t rule out Kooistra coming back when the numbers are kinder, but the only time he was active were the two games left guard Nate Livings was hurt. With none of the backups not near Kooistra’s versatility, the club has to think twice before activating Smith.

“We’ve got young guys and a young guy typically learns one spot,” Alexander said. “The only guy who (played more than one) as a rookie was (left tackle Andrew) Whitworth. There’s no solution.”

Unlike seasons past, Bengals earn attention

I grew up a Cincinnati Bengals fan, but lost interest over the years because I always felt owner Mike Brown treated the club as if it were his personal fantasy football team.

Why spend money on a general manager or a squadron of scouts when that would only take away some of the satisfaction of compiling a roster yourself and competing for the high stakes of the NFL?

Nevermind that they haven’t won since facemasks were fastened to helmets, the streamlined operation meant more fun for Brown as he engaged in his hobby at our expense.

But the Bengals’ 5-2 start has gotten my attention. Carson Palmer is still one of the best quarterbacks in the league and he has surprised me with his mobility. After tanking last season, Chad Ochocinco appears committed this year (maybe the Bengals were right in not caving to his trade demands).

Meet Chad Ochocinco, buy his book

If there was ever a perfect day to meet Bengals wide receiver, diva, camera hog and author Chad Johnson/Chad Ochocinco/Esteban Ochocinco, it would have to be Halloween, right?

So here’s your chance. Joseph-Beth Booksellers at Rookwood Pavilion is hosting Ochocinco on Saturday at 1 p.m., where he’ll be signing copies of his new book, “Ocho Cinco: What Football and Life Have Thrown My Way.” This is the book with the cover photo of Chad flipping the bird to the camera, or the reader, or the world, depending on your viewpoint

Chad Ochocinco talks trash via Twitter to Bears’ Cutler, Brown

Long before the team has even landed in Cincinnati for this Sunday’s afternoon skirmish against the Bengals, Chad Ochocinco is trying to fill up the Bears’ bulletin board.

In tweets to both quarterback Jay Cutler and defensive lineman Alex Brown, Ochocinco said he wants Cutler’s jersey, will torment cornerback Charles “Peanut” Tillman, and needs only 1.5 seconds to get open.

Yesterday, Ochocinco started in on Cutler [exchanges sic'd]:

@jaycutler6 tell your defense I’m gonna run circles around them, I’m mad we lost, peanut Tillman is gonna kiss da baby along with the rest’

To which Cutler responded:

@OGOchoCinco it’s only Monday. Already starting?

The exchange with Cutler continued: @JayCutler6 Jay I have to get a jump on yall, on a serious note tell Lovie to put Tillman on me all game with safety help, please!!!!

@OGOchoCinco Peanut on you with safety over top. You got it. Anything else you would like me to pass on?
